tips and watch-outs from families who've been there
sleep
- This property has almost 800 rooms, so if you prefer a more intimate environment or higher-touch service, it is not for you.
- There are an overwhelming number of room types, across 5 main areas
- Beach Village Villas and Cottages: largest rooms, with full kitchens (renovated in 2024)
- The Victorian: the historic main building (renovated in 2025)
- The Cabanas: poolside and beachside rooms with walkout patios (enjoy the pool while you baby naps)
- The Views: renovated in 2021; standard rooms and junior suites, most with a good ocean view
- Shore House: opened in 2022; 1-3 bedroom residences; the most modern building with it's own pool; more private and better service than other areas
- La Jolla Mom does a great job covering all the room types - see this article
- To get a lay of the land, view the resort map here
play
- Cabana pool is open to all guests; if you're staying at the Shore House or Beach Village you have access to an additional pool; all pools are heated and open year round
- The pool at the Shore House is zero entry (you must be staying at the Shore House to use this pool)
- Ocean Explorers Kids Club (5-12, seasonal) focuses on outdoor and indoor activities (they have an aquarium and interactive tide pool!); you need to make a reservation
- Surf lessons are available to kids age 2+
- Bikes are available to rent, but not for small kids; you can have a nearby bike rental shop drop off smaller bikes, bike seats, bike wagons, or a surrey bike (like a golf cart that you pedal)
- The private beach is quite large; however, you must pay for beach chairs and daybeds
- Don't forget, the Pacific Ocean is chilly year round! It's also sometimes off-limits due to bacteria levels
- If your kid likes watching airplanes, there will be plenty flying overhead
- There are several large grassy areas for kids to run around
- Most activities are an extra charge
- In the winter, they set up a beachfront ice skating rink
- You should book activities, cabanas, etc before you arrive
eat
- Many dining options, all with outside seating, ranging from grab-and-go to formal
- Babcock & Story Bar has live music many evenings
- Eno market opens at 6am
- Nobu opens May 2025
- Several restaurants offer online ordering for takeout
- There is currently NO room service
- Beach Roasts are popular, but cost $250 (you get 1 hour at a private beachfront fire pit and everything you need to make s'mores)
- Due to the size of the hotel, service can be a bit slow
